We stayed for a night and a day. Snorkeling was our main goal — the moment we hit the water we screamed, completely overwhelmed by the crystal-clear sea and massive schools of fish. The crew took us by boat to a safe, fish-filled spot, so we could relax and fully enjoy it. We even got to fillet the fish we caught right on the spot — an incredible experience!

The inn was spotlessly clean with a beautiful old-Japanese-farmhouse feel. Everyone at UGURU BOX was so warm and went out of their way to accommodate our requests. Truly grateful.

This place is about more than nature — it's about connecting with the locals and eating the freshest seafood imaginable. The island is small, but the pace is luxuriously slow. To get the most out of it, we strongly recommend staying overnight!

We booked the day trip: boat snorkeling, shore fishing, and lunch set.

We joined as a couple with two elementary-school kids who aren't strong swimmers. None of us had any experience, but the instructions were clear and easy to follow. We spotted tropical fish, rays, and sea turtles! Even the kids managed to catch fish — and we learned how to scale and gut them too.
The staff were so friendly and down-to-earth. We all cooked lunch together and ate as one big group — a wonderfully homey atmosphere. It might not suit everyone, but we had an incredibly rare and memorable experience.

Everything you want to know
before you come

When can I swim at Uguru Island?
The best season is July–September, but with a wetsuit you can snorkel from Golden Week through the end of September.
In cooler months, layer up with two wetsuits! (A second wetsuit is free to borrow.)
Is snorkeling difficult?
Not a problem even if you can't swim. With a wetsuit and life jacket, your body floats with zero effort. We start with a beach briefing, so even complete ocean beginners are totally fine.
Our guides stay right by your side throughout, and every year guests from elementary school age to their 60s join us. If you have any concerns, just reach out.
Do I need to wear a wetsuit?
Yes — a wetsuit is essential. It provides buoyancy and is a key part of staying safe.
Since you'll be in the water for a long time, it also prevents heat loss and reduces fatigue.
The waters around Uguru Island have plankton and jellyfish, so the wetsuit also protects your skin.
